So, you’re thinking of getting your self a fishing bivvy or perhaps you’re thinking of upgrading your existing bivvy to a new one. Whatever your reason for purchasing a new fishing bivvy this guide will provide you with all the info you need to make an informed decision before you part with you cash.

Fishing Bivvy History

Early fishing bivvies were really just glorified fishing umbrellas – which comprised the standard fishing umbrella with wrap around sides. It has to be said that these were pretty terrible – they leaked when it rained and if it was windy, well you would really have been better off going home. Having said that this type of fishing bivvy does still exist and are now much, much better, so if your cash is tight and your looking for cheap fishing bivvies then try looking for umbrella based systems.

Fishing bivvies have really come about for the benefit of carp anglers and specimen hunters. So the likelihood is, is that if you’re reading this article you are either a carp angler or specimen hunter of some description. If you are either of these things you will be spending some significant time in your bivvy so it’s worth spending sometime researching before you part with your cash.

Fishing Bivvy Features

Here’s a description of what sort of features you should be looking for in a new fishing bivvy:

The first point seems very obvious – you need your fishing bivvy to be made from a waterproof material. Not only does the fabric need to be waterproof it also needs to be hardwearing and ideally breathable. Having a fabric that is breathable will prevent condensation building up in your bivvy, making it more comfortable to spend time in.

The weak point in any waterproof system is always the seams so makes sure if it doesn’t specify in the bivvies description. that the seams are taped. Taping the seams after the panels have been stitched together will prevent any ingress of water – no waking up to damp sleeping bags.

Although breathable fabrics are a fantastic innovation in textile technology, it will not actually allow the air to flow through your bivvy. If you’re going to be using your fishing bivvy in the summer then air vents are going to be an absolute necessity. Unfortunately the summer and water together means insects so you’ll want to make sure that all of your air vents have mesh on them to prevent the little critters getting in.

Make sure that the carp fishing bivvy you buy has secure door tie backs. There’s nothing worse than a door that keep flapping around in the wind. If you can find a fishing bivvy that has a insect mesh on it then all the better – this will allow you to have the door open in the summer and keep the midges out. Some carp fishing bivvies come with interchangeable door panels – so in the summer when you want some light in but the insects out you can have the insect mesh in place, but in the winter when you want some light in and the cold out you can zip in a door that has a large transparent panel in it.

Check the weight of your fishing bivvy before you buy it, at some point your going to need to carry it or transport it in some manner. The lightest bivvies will have aluminium poles so look out for this feature. Not only do you want aluminium poles to reduce the overall weight of the bivvy – you want them made from this material because they will not corrode.

Make sure that you find a fishing bivvy that is large enough to accommodate all of your kit. You may have multiple chairs for example – a fishing chair and a bed chair – and it’s nice if you can keep them both set up and not have one or the other. You may also want to keep your fishing bag and rod holdall in there as well.

Around the base of your bivvy you want at least 12 pegging points – if not more. Having more pegging points will increase the stability of your fishing bivvy. You don’t always have to use them all, but if your fishing on uneven ground then having more pegging points gives you more options of which to use.

The final point is to check what accessories come with your new fishing bivvy, You don’t want to outlay a wedge of cash only to find out that it doesn’t come with pegs for example. Try to find a deal that includes:

Pegs

Peg Bag

A Heavy duty ground sheet

A winter wrap if possible

Having the right fishing bag will make your fishing trips far more enjoyable. If you haven’t already got yourself a purpose designed fishing bag then you’re probably making do with and old rucksack or even worse an old plastic cantilevered toolbox that you have to carry by hand.

A fishing bag isn’t for all types of angler, match fisherman tend to have seat boxes and as the name suggest… is a seat… and a box… (The box bit is where the tackle is stored!) But this isn’t suitable for all types of fishing. If you’re in to carp fishing or you are a specimen hunter the likelihood is that you’ve already got yourself a fishing chair that is far superior to any seat box, so you’ll want to kit yourself out with a fishing bag to keep all of your tackle and bait in.

If you’re looking for a new bag or want to upgrade your existing one here’s a few points your may want to consider:

Size
Size matters! Heard that before? Well getting the right sized fishing bag really does matter. Getting one too small and you’re going to struggle to get all of your kit in it. If on the other hand you get a bag that’s too big you’ll be inclined to fill it, and that means more weight to carry and difficult in finding what you want in it. Try to avoid getting a massive fishing bag.

Organisation
Not only is the size of your fishing bag important also is the number of compartments that it has. Have just the right number of compartments will allow you to access all of your tackle quickly and easily. One of the best solutions is to have exterior pockets that house separate cases.

One of my favourite pieces of fishing equipment is my Nash tackle bag. It’s got a zip in the lid of it, one pocket on either side of it and a third on the front. Each of these pockets houses a smaller pull out bag – about the size of a mess tin –these bags allow you to keep smaller pieces of tackle such as hooks, weights, floats and feeders in an organised manor.

Handles/Straps
Try to find a bag that has a number of methods to carry it as a minimum you’ll want it to have a shoulder strap but even better is if it has carry handles too. If you find a bag that does have handles, make sure that the shoulder strap is detachable – from experience it’s really easy to trip over a shoulder strap if it’s flapping about.

Materials
Like fishing rod bags your fishing bag will need to be made out of a strong waterproof material. Unless you’re incredibly lucky you’re not going to be able to dodge the rain forever, and when you do get caught out you want to make sure that your fishing kit is well protected. I mentioned previously my Nash fishing bag and I’ll come back to it again – it’s got a thick durable vinyl type base on it which means I can sling it down in the mud and the contents won’t get wet, not only that but when it does get wet and muddy I can easily wipe it down before putting it in the car.

Most of the specialist fishing equipment comes in three colours/patterns – you’ll be faced with either a khaki or black plain fabric or a camouflage pattern. It’s a matter of personal choice really, there have been a few studies in to what fish can see above the water but personally I think that the fish will feel your vibrations before they can see you. Not to mention that from the angle they’re looking at they will be looking at your silhouette against the sky so probable can’t make out colours anyway.

A camouflaged pattern on a bag will mean that it will hide the dirt better – so if that sort of thing bothers you then this may be the best solution for you.

Matching?
If you’ve got a fishing rod bag already the manufacture may well make a matching tackle bag, and although fishing isn’t exactly a fashion parade sometimes it’s nice to have similar equipment, particularly if you are please with your rod holdall.

Bait compartment
You’ll find that some fishing bags have waterproof compartments specifically designed to store bait in. If you don’t have a separate bait bag then make sure that you look for this feature. The waterproof properties of it will ensure that no oils or flavours leach out in to the rest of your bag.

Hopefully this has given you some tips so that you can make an informed decision before buying your bag.

With specialist fishing chairs now being well established, products are now beginning to move up to the next level. Korum a UK based angling company have come up with the accessory chair. These guys invest serious time, energy and money in to the design and development of the products. Korum’s strap line is ‘Tacticle Angling Products’ and I think that describes them very well.

So what is the Accessory chair?

In essence the Accessory Chair is a stand alone chair that functions as an excellent specialist fishing chair in its own right. It has a number of features that make it stand out from the crowd, one such feature is its vertical leg system. Where most the legs of most chairs are at an angle greater the 90o to the seat base, the Accessory Chair legs are a 90o to the seat base i.e vertical. So what I hear you say, well this actually means that this chair has a significantly reduced foot prints allowing it to be used in smaller swims. It also means that you are not likely to trip over the legs. But… here is it’s defining feature, the Accessory fishing chair has a range of addons that can effectively be bolted to it.

What sort of addons?
I’ve mentioned below a small number of the accessories available:

A telescopic feeder arm (form of rod rest)

A tripod feeder arm.

A spacer arm – this is essentially like you traditional bank stick – it has a thread at the top of it which will take all of the accessories that will fit a bank stick.

A universal arm – same as above.

A butt rest with arm

A brolly arm

A twin rod buzz bar

A side tray – really useful for all sorts of bits and pieces and bait preparation.

You can even get a kit that will temporary convert the chair in to a trolley so you can get all your kit to the swim in comfort.

At this point you may be asking why is that useful, well, how many times have you been fishing from a concrete or solid standing? How many times has the ground been that baked in the middle of summer that you can’t get a rod rest or umbrella in the ground? The Accessory Chair removes all of these issues because all of the accessories mount to the chair and therefore do not have to be put in the ground at all. Simple but ingenious. Is this the fishing chair for you? See the choosing the right fishing chair article.

Korum are not the only manufacturers of and accessory based chair though, TF gear produce the Bank Boss Chair, you can find an overview here.
