No serious carp angler would be without a bait boat and there certainly are plenty to choose from this article takes a look at some of the best fishing bait boats available in 2010.

What features do the top bait boats have?

One of the ultimate features you should be looking for in any bait boat would be for it to be propelled by jets. Jet propelled bait boats mean that there are no propellers to get tangled up in weed. Of course you can get bait boats that are propeller propelled and these are fitted with weed guards. However, it has to be said, that we’ve all seen thin wispy weed and surface weed that has long stringy roots that are just waiting to get tangled up in a nice spinning propeller. A jet propeller has no moving parts outside of the boat and hence removes the possibility of weed getting tangled up in it all together. This means that you won’t be getting in a boat your self to rescue your boat!

All of the top bait boats will have a hopper that will keep your bait safe and dry. There’s nothing worse than having all of your bait in PVA bags fused together by the time they reach their ‘drop off’ point. If you’re not choosing a bait boat from the four below, make sure that it’ll keep your bait nice and dry.

The final feature to look out for – which main seem unimportant at the time – is how is the boat powered, and more importantly how are you going to charge it when you are out fishing? One clever solution to this is that some manufacturers supply their bait boats with solar panels which allow you to charge the boat right out side your fishing bivvy!

The Top Manufacturers of Bait Boats

OK so you know what features you’re looking for, or at least you now know what you should be looking for so who are the manufacturers of these vessels? The top bait boats on the market come from mainly three companies – these are Angling Technics, Waverunner and Viper and all of them are based in the UK. Viper has four bait boats in its 2010 range; the Viper Icon 2, the Viper Mk3, the Viper X Range and the Viper Storm. Angling Technics – like Viper – also have four carp bait boats in their range; the Micorcat Mk II, the Procat Mk II, the Technicat and their inspiringly named Standard Bait Boat. The final manufacturer – Waverunner – has two boats in its range and these are the Waverunner Bait Boat Mk3 and the Atom Bati Boat Mk2.

So what are the top 2010 bait boats?

Although Waverunner feature in the top manufacturers they unfortunately do not do a jet propelled bait boat so you won’t be seeing either of their models in this ‘top’ list. By Angling Technics the Microcat bait boat makes it in to the top list by being the only boat in the range that is jet propelled. Viper however can be crowned the top manufacturer of bait boats by not having any propeller powered boats in their range. That’s right – all of Vipers boat feature jet propulsion and that means less weed tangles and significantly less chances of your boat being lost… or you having to rescue it!

You can’t really go to far wrong with any of the boats from Viper and with suggested retail prices ranging from £399.00 to £790.00 you are sure to find a bait boat that fits your budget and do what you want it to. Here’s a brief guide to each of the carp bait boats in Vipers range:

So, you’re thinking of getting your self a fishing bivvy or perhaps you’re thinking of upgrading your existing bivvy to a new one. Whatever your reason for purchasing a new fishing bivvy this guide will provide you with all the info you need to make an informed decision before you part with you cash.

Fishing Bivvy History

Early fishing bivvies were really just glorified fishing umbrellas – which comprised the standard fishing umbrella with wrap around sides. It has to be said that these were pretty terrible – they leaked when it rained and if it was windy, well you would really have been better off going home. Having said that this type of fishing bivvy does still exist and are now much, much better, so if your cash is tight and your looking for cheap fishing bivvies then try looking for umbrella based systems.

Fishing bivvies have really come about for the benefit of carp anglers and specimen hunters. So the likelihood is, is that if you’re reading this article you are either a carp angler or specimen hunter of some description. If you are either of these things you will be spending some significant time in your bivvy so it’s worth spending sometime researching before you part with your cash.

Fishing Bivvy Features

Here’s a description of what sort of features you should be looking for in a new fishing bivvy:

The first point seems very obvious – you need your fishing bivvy to be made from a waterproof material. Not only does the fabric need to be waterproof it also needs to be hardwearing and ideally breathable. Having a fabric that is breathable will prevent condensation building up in your bivvy, making it more comfortable to spend time in.

The weak point in any waterproof system is always the seams so makes sure if it doesn’t specify in the bivvies description. that the seams are taped. Taping the seams after the panels have been stitched together will prevent any ingress of water – no waking up to damp sleeping bags.

Although breathable fabrics are a fantastic innovation in textile technology, it will not actually allow the air to flow through your bivvy. If you’re going to be using your fishing bivvy in the summer then air vents are going to be an absolute necessity. Unfortunately the summer and water together means insects so you’ll want to make sure that all of your air vents have mesh on them to prevent the little critters getting in.

Make sure that the carp fishing bivvy you buy has secure door tie backs. There’s nothing worse than a door that keep flapping around in the wind. If you can find a fishing bivvy that has a insect mesh on it then all the better – this will allow you to have the door open in the summer and keep the midges out. Some carp fishing bivvies come with interchangeable door panels – so in the summer when you want some light in but the insects out you can have the insect mesh in place, but in the winter when you want some light in and the cold out you can zip in a door that has a large transparent panel in it.

Check the weight of your fishing bivvy before you buy it, at some point your going to need to carry it or transport it in some manner. The lightest bivvies will have aluminium poles so look out for this feature. Not only do you want aluminium poles to reduce the overall weight of the bivvy – you want them made from this material because they will not corrode.

Make sure that you find a fishing bivvy that is large enough to accommodate all of your kit. You may have multiple chairs for example – a fishing chair and a bed chair – and it’s nice if you can keep them both set up and not have one or the other. You may also want to keep your fishing bag and rod holdall in there as well.

Around the base of your bivvy you want at least 12 pegging points – if not more. Having more pegging points will increase the stability of your fishing bivvy. You don’t always have to use them all, but if your fishing on uneven ground then having more pegging points gives you more options of which to use.

The final point is to check what accessories come with your new fishing bivvy, You don’t want to outlay a wedge of cash only to find out that it doesn’t come with pegs for example. Try to find a deal that includes:

Pegs

Peg Bag

A Heavy duty ground sheet

A winter wrap if possible

Having the right fishing bag will make your fishing trips far more enjoyable. If you haven’t already got yourself a purpose designed fishing bag then you’re probably making do with and old rucksack or even worse an old plastic cantilevered toolbox that you have to carry by hand.

A fishing bag isn’t for all types of angler, match fisherman tend to have seat boxes and as the name suggest… is a seat… and a box… (The box bit is where the tackle is stored!) But this isn’t suitable for all types of fishing. If you’re in to carp fishing or you are a specimen hunter the likelihood is that you’ve already got yourself a fishing chair that is far superior to any seat box, so you’ll want to kit yourself out with a fishing bag to keep all of your tackle and bait in.

If you’re looking for a new bag or want to upgrade your existing one here’s a few points your may want to consider:

Size
Size matters! Heard that before? Well getting the right sized fishing bag really does matter. Getting one too small and you’re going to struggle to get all of your kit in it. If on the other hand you get a bag that’s too big you’ll be inclined to fill it, and that means more weight to carry and difficult in finding what you want in it. Try to avoid getting a massive fishing bag.

Organisation
Not only is the size of your fishing bag important also is the number of compartments that it has. Have just the right number of compartments will allow you to access all of your tackle quickly and easily. One of the best solutions is to have exterior pockets that house separate cases.

One of my favourite pieces of fishing equipment is my Nash tackle bag. It’s got a zip in the lid of it, one pocket on either side of it and a third on the front. Each of these pockets houses a smaller pull out bag – about the size of a mess tin –these bags allow you to keep smaller pieces of tackle such as hooks, weights, floats and feeders in an organised manor.

Handles/Straps
Try to find a bag that has a number of methods to carry it as a minimum you’ll want it to have a shoulder strap but even better is if it has carry handles too. If you find a bag that does have handles, make sure that the shoulder strap is detachable – from experience it’s really easy to trip over a shoulder strap if it’s flapping about.

Materials
Like fishing rod bags your fishing bag will need to be made out of a strong waterproof material. Unless you’re incredibly lucky you’re not going to be able to dodge the rain forever, and when you do get caught out you want to make sure that your fishing kit is well protected. I mentioned previously my Nash fishing bag and I’ll come back to it again – it’s got a thick durable vinyl type base on it which means I can sling it down in the mud and the contents won’t get wet, not only that but when it does get wet and muddy I can easily wipe it down before putting it in the car.

Most of the specialist fishing equipment comes in three colours/patterns – you’ll be faced with either a khaki or black plain fabric or a camouflage pattern. It’s a matter of personal choice really, there have been a few studies in to what fish can see above the water but personally I think that the fish will feel your vibrations before they can see you. Not to mention that from the angle they’re looking at they will be looking at your silhouette against the sky so probable can’t make out colours anyway.

A camouflaged pattern on a bag will mean that it will hide the dirt better – so if that sort of thing bothers you then this may be the best solution for you.

Matching?
If you’ve got a fishing rod bag already the manufacture may well make a matching tackle bag, and although fishing isn’t exactly a fashion parade sometimes it’s nice to have similar equipment, particularly if you are please with your rod holdall.

Bait compartment
You’ll find that some fishing bags have waterproof compartments specifically designed to store bait in. If you don’t have a separate bait bag then make sure that you look for this feature. The waterproof properties of it will ensure that no oils or flavours leach out in to the rest of your bag.

Hopefully this has given you some tips so that you can make an informed decision before buying your bag.

There is no other fish that has its own reel, but if you’re aim is to bag one of these monsters from the deep a carp reel couldn’t be a more important piece of fishing kit. The unique way that carp take the bait gave rise to a whole new genre of fishing reel altogether which long before it they became a member of the ‘carp reels’ group were known as baitrunners. The ‘baitrunner’ type of fishing reels were first introduced to the market in 1986 and were a patented technology by Shimano. At the time it was revolutionary and you’d now be hard pushed to find a manufacturer of fishing reels that doesn’t have a ‘baitrunner’ type carp reel in its range.

What is this Baitrunner technology that all Carp Reels Should have?

In essence a carp reels have two clutches:

The first clutch is one that you would use under normal fishing conditions that is setup to match the breaking strain of your fishing line.

A second clutch that is much lighter that the first clutch – it’s so light that a fish taking the bait should find little or no resistance.

So the ‘Baitrunner’ name is really just a short way of saying it is a fishing reel with two clutches. Although they may not work in quite the same way any reel that is branded a carp reel will have a variation of this mechanism – they will all have two clutches.

If your new to the sport, never caught a carp, or never caught a carp using any of the carp anglers specialist rigs you will probably not understand the significance of this development in carp reels. The ‘bolt rig’ as it was known became a very fashionable type of carp rig, most carp anglers will still use a variation of this rig today for a very good reason – it works. A bolt rig is a rig where the fish picks up the bait, feels the resistance of a large weight and bolts and therefore manages to hook it’s self. This sounds like a fantastic idea as carp are wise old beasts that are prolific picky bait takers – the slighted hesitation in striking at the right moment will result in them ejecting the hook and bait before you have chance to make contact. The bolt rig solved this problem but gave rise to others.

A large powerful fish like a carp bolting would cause two problems on a non carp specific type of reel – it would either:

a) Snap your fishing line immediately with it’s powerful initial run

Or

b) It wouldn’t be powerful enough to snap the line so it would drag your rod and reel in to the water – as ridiculous as this sounds this really does happen.

The simple way to get around this was to leave your bail arm off – and this was a fine solution… if it wasn’t windy or you were fishing in moving water. The slightest bit of wind or fast moving water and you’d see line being stripper from your reel. This wasn’t only annoying, but also dangerous – should a fish take your bait you would be unable to strike which could lead to the fish swallowing the hook.

Carp reels solve all of these problems by simply having two clutches. Your normal (first) clutch is set up to match the breaking strain of your fishing line. With this clutch engaged you cast you bait out and set your rod up on a rod rest or pod. Once you were happy with the position of your bait you then engage the lighter (second) clutch – or the ‘baitrunner’ as Shimano call it.

Similarly to the first clutch you would also be able to adjust the tension of the second clutch so if you are fishing in windy conditions or moving water you would increase the tension of the clutch, in still conditions you would have the clutch tension on a light setting. With your clutch set up correctly a fish could take the bait, bolt and would take line from your spool without it getting tangled or dragging your rod and reel in the water.

To engage the second clutch is as easy as picking up your rod and turning the handle of your carp reel. The turn of the handle instantly engages the first clutch which is set up to match your fishing line weigh and hey presto your IN!

Now, you may ask why you don’t have the same problem of the line breaking when you strike in to the fish as you would if you were fishing with a non carp specific reel. The answer to this lies in the angle of the rod, when you bait is in position your rod will inevitable be pointing towards the bait, when the fish takes the bait it is pulling line straight though the eyes of your rod and directly of the reel. When you have the rod in your hands pointing towards the sky and you strike your rod bends, so you rod absorbs the power of the fish in conjunction with the fishing line so it the line is far less likely to break.

Hopefully this article has give you some idea as to why carp reels are such an important piece of fishing kit to any specialist angler.

With the specialist fishing chair market really heating up, manufacturers have been forced to lower there costs. This really is great news for those of us that enjoy spending time on the bank – not only have manufacturers been forced to drive their costs down, they’ve also had to maintain quality at the same time. There are a number of good chairs currently on the market for under 50 quid and here they are:

Heading up the pack is the Vision Kenwick Carp Fishing Chair and at around the £25 mark you get a lot for your money; four independent adjustable legs (all with mud feet), a heavily padded seat and back rest, and a lightweight yet strong frame. The manufacturer claims that this super strong fishing chair will take up to 20 stone in weight!

Second up is XQMax Compact Carp Fishing Chair at only £3 more than the vision chair making it £28 you again it has adjustable legs with big fat mud feet on them, preventing the chair from sinking in to mud. Although the frame is steel it is powder coated, making it corrosion resistant and incredibly strong. The seating area is made from water resistant PVC and is heavily padded. The fold down design means that you’ll easily get it in the back of the car.

This Lightweight Stalking Fishing Chair is third in the pack. Although at £34 it may seem expensive for what your are getting compared to the feature rich previously mentioned chairs – but what you shouldn’t forget is that this is a stalking chair – you’re not necessarily going to be spending hours sat on it. For that purpose you can’t really compare the price with the previous chairs because really your paying for a chair that’s super lightweight and strong, so that you can carry it around all day and it can take knocks and scrapes.

The fourth ones a bit of curve ball, it’s not actually a chair at all – it’s a bed chair! At a penny less than 50 quid the Vision Kenwick Bed Chair offers outstanding value for money that can’t really be competed with. It’s 6 leg design allows it to take up to 20 stone in weight and the thick mattress means if the fishing’s quite you’re guaranteed to get a good nights sleep!
Perhaps you’re just starting out fishing and don’t really want to sit on an old bin bag on a wet muddy bank. In the same breath thought you really don’t want to for out a lot of money on an expensive fishing chair. I can see where you are coming from, I have fads and some of the fads become long term hobbies, but when you’re just starting out sometime your don’t want to spend a fortune on equipment. The list below has got five chairs that cost less than a tenner! That’s right you’ll get a fishing chair for less than £10 so they won’t break the budget, they’re not fishing specific, so if you decide fishing isn’t for you, you can always use them for another purpose.

The Bank Boss Chair is the top of the range fishing chair form the TV celebrity fisherman Matt Hayes company TF Gear (Total Fishing Gear)

In terms of specialist fishing chair it ticks all of the boxes. It has a fully adjustable back rest so you can get that comfy position for spending hours lazing on the fishing banks, and many users of this chair have commented on how comfortable this chair really is. Part of how comfortableness can probably be credited it its totally independent legs that can be adjusted to suit any terrain or sloping bank to within reason. The legs also have large mud feet on the base of them preventing the feet from sinking in to muddy banks.

Back on to ticking the boxes, the back rest is also adjustable so that you can get the right angle. The main seating area of this chair are also hevily padded, so as I mentioned above users of this chair really are very happy with the comfortableness of it. As if having a comfortable chair to sit and fish from all day wasn’t good enough there are a number of attachments and add-ons available, and this means that you can use rod rests, bite alarms and feeder arms when you are fishing from a concrete or other solid surface. It really does get rid of the need for hammering bank sticks in to the ground and scaring fish off in the first place. In terms of the attachments you can get there are:

Tri-pod feeder arm

Buzz bars

Rear rest pole

Rod rest set

Umbrella arm

The one negative that people have commented on with this chair is the weight of it. Personally I don’t think that this is such an issue, if you want a lighter chair you have to be prepared to pay for and with the bargain price of the TF Gear Bank Boss Chair you can hardly be quibbling over a few grams!
There are numerous fishing chairs available on the market and the style that you go for will largely be dictated by the type of fishing you do. This article will discuss the chairs available to the novice and roving angler. Specialist fishing chairs are cover a vast range and have been discussed in the specialist fishing chair article.

Novice Angler
If you’re new to the sport you may just be looking for a simple fold out chair that does the job and is low cost.

Roving Angler
If you’re a roving sort of angler you may look for a lightweight chair that has a minimum of fuss – it just need to be lightweight, sturdy and reliable.

Match Angler
If you’re a match angler the likelihood is that you will be sitting on your tackle box, it is therefore a whole new area of discussion that’ outside the scope of this website to discuss the sorts of fishing tackle boxes available to the match angler.

New to angling? This may be your first chair.

For the novice angler there is a limited range of fishing chairs available, many of the chairs from the camping market will be suitable for use. There is the standard fold out chair based on the traditional 1970’s type deckchair that quite simply appears to fold in half. There’s the newer equivalent of this where the chair folds in on it’s self and then there’s the well loved director style chairs. I would recommend the second type of chair that folds in on it’s self – it folds down very compactly, usually comes with a bag and is now very cheap to get hold of.

Lightweigt and compact - ideal for roving with.

There is a slightly wider range of fishing chairs available to the roving angler. Because the roving angler is past the ‘novice’ stage of the sport, they are more likely to be willing to spend a little bit more on a chair. Manufacturers are quick to latch on to this and hence there is a wider range available. There is the standard fold in half chair, but there are also the stool type chairs and the backpack/rucksack type chairs. All of these chairs focus on transportability in terms of their size and weight. I wouldn’t be so brave to recommend a chair to the roving angler – the sorts of fishing roving anglers do is vast and to recommend one chair would be almost impossible and doing them a disservice.

With specialist fishing chairs now being well established, products are now beginning to move up to the next level. Korum a UK based angling company have come up with the accessory chair. These guys invest serious time, energy and money in to the design and development of the products. Korum’s strap line is ‘Tacticle Angling Products’ and I think that describes them very well.

So what is the Accessory chair?

In essence the Accessory Chair is a stand alone chair that functions as an excellent specialist fishing chair in its own right. It has a number of features that make it stand out from the crowd, one such feature is its vertical leg system. Where most the legs of most chairs are at an angle greater the 90o to the seat base, the Accessory Chair legs are a 90o to the seat base i.e vertical. So what I hear you say, well this actually means that this chair has a significantly reduced foot prints allowing it to be used in smaller swims. It also means that you are not likely to trip over the legs. But… here is it’s defining feature, the Accessory fishing chair has a range of addons that can effectively be bolted to it.

What sort of addons?
I’ve mentioned below a small number of the accessories available:

A telescopic feeder arm (form of rod rest)

A tripod feeder arm.

A spacer arm – this is essentially like you traditional bank stick – it has a thread at the top of it which will take all of the accessories that will fit a bank stick.

A universal arm – same as above.

A butt rest with arm

A brolly arm

A twin rod buzz bar

A side tray – really useful for all sorts of bits and pieces and bait preparation.

You can even get a kit that will temporary convert the chair in to a trolley so you can get all your kit to the swim in comfort.

At this point you may be asking why is that useful, well, how many times have you been fishing from a concrete or solid standing? How many times has the ground been that baked in the middle of summer that you can’t get a rod rest or umbrella in the ground? The Accessory Chair removes all of these issues because all of the accessories mount to the chair and therefore do not have to be put in the ground at all. Simple but ingenious. Is this the fishing chair for you? See the choosing the right fishing chair article.

Korum are not the only manufacturers of and accessory based chair though, TF gear produce the Bank Boss Chair, you can find an overview here.

Of all of the fishing chair markets the specialist anglers marketplace is the broadest. They are the hardcore fishermen (and fisherwoman) that are highly passionate and enthusiastic about their sport. They will camp out for nights, travel thousands of miles and endure treacherous weather for that once in a lifetime fish. These are the people that are willing to part with their cash to get the best fishing chairs that they can afford. The willingness of these anglers to spend money on their sport has driven traditional fishing manufacturers to develop sophisticated fishing chairs that suit a range of budgets and fishing styles. Many of the products now in the specialist market have very close relations to the camping market, a they almost need to serve the same purpose.

The fishing chairs that are aimed at these specialist anglers focus on comfort and although weight is considered, it is not at the expense of a very restful chair… as you can imagine these fishing chairs are going to get a lot of ‘seating’ time. Almost all of the almost specialist fishing chairs will come with the features mentioned in the homepage article :

adjustable legs – it is important that these are independently adjustable.

wide feet – providing a stable base on muddy surfaces,

adjustable backrests – to tweak the seating angle to perfection

adjustable feet rests if it’s a bed chair.

heavily padded seating – it’s all about comfort.

elastic sprung seating to further enhance the comfort of the chair.

Some chairs even come with add on accessories such as a bait table and rod holders – see the Korum Accessory Chair or the TF Gear Boss Bank Chair The choices available are endless, as I mentioned in the home page post there are many things to look out for.

When first introduced actually getting hold of a decent fishing chair was a task in its self. With the rapid increase in popularity of the Carp fishing market more and more manufacturers and distributors jumped onboard to satisfy the growing demand for specialist angling products. There are now many good online and physical retailers stocking all of the chairs available. As a staring place see this list of 2009 specialist fishing chairs
